Introduction

Hello, I'm Jerin Biju, and I work as an Associate Digital Design Manager at Desapex. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) and spent the early part of my career gaining practical experience at construction sites and within manufacturing environments. After seven years in the industry, I pursued a Postgraduate Certification in Construction Management (PGCM) from XIME, Bangalore. When I first joined Desapex, concepts like BIM, digital technologies, and the processes and standards within the AEC industry were new to me. The strong desire to learn continuously made me today to be actively involved in developing, refining, and implementing these digital processes and standards for successful project delivery and organizational growth. My past experiences in construction and manufacturing have equipped me to address challenges in these areas, enabling me to contribute meaningfully to our initiatives at Desapex

Personal Journey

I take great pride in saying that I was born and raised in one of the most beautiful places in the world, affectionately known as 'God’s Own Country' Kerala. My home is nestled in the heart of a rubber plantation in Kanjirapally, part of the Kottayam district, renowned as the land of rubber. The scenic beauty of my hometown is unparalleled, but I’ll pause there. I grew up with my grandparents, whose unconditional love and care enriched my childhood. Our home, the 'Tharavadu,' is the gathering place for relatives and cousins, creating cherished memories during holidays and family celebrations. My family includes my father, mother, two sisters, my wife, and a daughter. My father, a dedicated businessman and planter, worked hard to uplift our family in society, and I admire his courage. The delicious aroma of food prepared by my mother, a homemaker, makes my mouth watery, and her unwavering support, calm demeanor, and prayerful approach to challenges have always been an inspiration to me. I attended three different schools during my education. For my primary schooling, I went to a nearby school, and I still remember the jeep rides that were part of my daily routine. I completed my upper primary and high school at another school far from home, followed by higher secondary education at another institution. Throughout these years, I enjoyed participating in dramas and skits. I pursued my engineering degree at a nearby college, which allowed me to continue as a day scholar until graduation.

Professional Path

After earning my engineering degree, I was uncertain about my next steps. I completed a short Electrical System Design course and AutoCAD certification, then explored various job roles, leading to a challenging trial and error phase. My career began as a site engineer, evolving into electrical design and involvement in diverse construction projects like metro rail, hospitals, and manufacturing facilities. I also gained experience in building maintenance, manufacturing engineering, and production, taking on roles in resource management, quality control, accounting, and training. In early 2020, after securing a site engineer role at an MNC, the COVID-19 pandemic led to lockdowns that impacted my job. Determined to use the time wisely, I pursued a construction management course, realizing how much knowledge I had accumulated during the interview. I was accepted and began the certification. Returning to college after seven years and being a hosteller was a significant milestone. Guest lectures at my course by a Desapex director introduced me to BIM, sparking my interest as it addressed challenges that I had faced and opened the door to digital transformation in AEC. I began an internship at Desapex in February 2021, learning about ISO 19650 standards and conducting internal audits on various projects. Completing this, I was offered a full-time role and joined back in September 2021, continuing my journey of growth and support.

Role at Desapex

My primary responsibilities include managing and delivering Digital Design Management(DDM) and Digital Project Management (DPM) projects, such as CAD to BIM and Scan to BIM, focusing on manufacturing facilities while ensuring adherence to ISO 19650 and project standards. As a Synchro-certified professional, I implement 4D & 5D BIM. As well as ISO 19650 and CDE, at both project and organizational levels. I also participate in technical business development meetings to present our services and understand client requirements. Currently, I am establishing quality-checking procedures to guarantee high-quality project delivery and meet client expectations. I also contribute through blogs, webinars, training internal teams, and guest lecturing at colleges. Leading the BIM team for India's first semiconductor manufacturing facility project was a significant milestone, earning recognition as Desapex's best “Domestic Project Manager” of 2023. Additionally, I have been a part of implementing ISO 19650, 4D & 5D BIM for key organizations in India and led both internal and British Standard Institute(BSI) audits for ISO 19650 certification in 2021 and 2022 at Desapex’s organization.

Unique Qualities and Superpowers

My unique qualities include a strong eagerness to learn, problem-solving abilities, adaptability to change, and an openness to new opportunities. I take pride in supporting and helping others while identifying and implementing digital solutions to address project challenges. Unlike many, I prefer working from the office rather than remotely. I have researched and introduced a few add-ins to simplify modeling and clash detection in various projects, driven by the need to alleviate my team's pain points. Quick responses to team issues and my adaptable nature have enabled me to learn new tools and technologies and tackle challenges head-on. My calm and approachable demeanor encourages colleagues to seek my help, fostering strong communication and relationships with both team members and clients. Additionally, maintaining a well-dressed appearance at the office boosts my confidence.

A Typical Day at Desapex

My day at Desapex usually starts with greeting colleagues along the way to my desk. I then check my mailbox for important emails, client updates, or meeting notifications. After that, I connect with the project team to review the work status, allocate tasks, and address any challenges they may be facing. I prioritize tasks for the day and dive into project-related activities, preparing for meetings or discussions. On lighter days, I focus on learning and skill development. I make it a point to take breaks by walking around the office, which helps me stay connected with the team and gain insights into any issues they might be encountering. I strive to maintain a healthy work-life balance by being punctual at the office and leaving on time, ensuring I have quality time for family and friends. I rarely check work emails or notifications after hours, and weekends and holidays are dedicated to personal time unless there's something urgent that requires my attention.

Why Desapex?

Desapex is the first company in my career where I have completed three years and continue to grow. What stands out to me are the advancements in technology that drive our digital project deliveries. The opportunities for continuous learning and certification, along with encouragement to advance professionally, are highly valued. I appreciate the unique challenges that each project brings and the collaborative teamwork involved in overcoming them. The chance to work on a variety of projects, including international ones, is another highlight. Most importantly, the support from colleagues and the genuine care from our leaders for both our professional and personal well-being make Desapex truly special.

Personal Touch

I don’t have specific hobbies, but I enjoy driving with music and going for site visits. These are my ways to unwind and relieve stress. I also love cooking, especially when it comes to preparing non-vegetarian dishes. Being part of skits and dramas for church activities continues to be something I enjoy. Spending time with my family is a priority, filled with good conversations and hearty laughter. I make it a point to visit them at least once a month, and during long holidays, I take the opportunity to spend quality time at home. I also stay in touch with relatives, whether by visiting or calling. When I visit my hometown, I always carve out time for friends, packed with fun, unplanned adventures, street food, and laughter. And of course, there’s always that one phone call that brings everything to a pause guess who it is!

Impact and Future Aspirations

I envision myself in a leadership and strategic role at Desapex, overseeing project activities and taking on diverse responsibilities to grow within the organization. As we continue to evolve together with different verticals and goals, I aim to expand my expertise through ongoing learning. In the future, I also see myself exploring international opportunities, particularly with new branches abroad, where I can contribute to global businesses and projects. With our innovative digital tools and technologies, I am excited to support the AEC industry and beyond, helping build a sustainable future for our customers worldwide.

Closing Thoughts

I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Lord Almighty and to everyone who has supported and guided me through my journey, especially during challenging times. A special thank you to Desapex and the incredible team for their unwavering support in my professional growth. Let’s reach new heights together! Remember, starting your career at a modest level isn’t always within your control, but the drive to advance as you gain experience is your responsibility. While there may be obstacles and those who try to hold you back, let your progress both personal and professionalbe your response.
